The World AMR Awareness week was conducted jointly by the Department of General Medicine and Department of Clinical Microbiology, BGS GIMS on 18-11-2025.

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is a growing public health concern, a silent pandemic, which necessitates immediate action to curb it. Therapeutic options for Multi Drug Resistant(MDR) pathogens are limited, making it a challenge for health care professionals to treat them. It was increases the morbidity, mortality and the financial burden on the patient. Strategies that can minimise AMR, include surveillance, following AWaRe group classification of antibiotics, preventing self-medication and enforcing legislation on the proper usage of antibiotics, only against a prescription. All the stake holders in the health care industry should strive towards this. Therefore, in this context, various activities were conducted as a part of World AMR Awareness Week 2025 in our teaching hospital.

The programme was jointly conducted by Department of General Medicine and Department of Clinical Microbiology. It was presided by Dr.M.E.Mohan, Dean cum Principal, Dr. Srikanth Kulkarni, Medical Superintendent, Dr. Mithun Somaiah, HOD of General Medicine, Dr. Ragini Ananth Kashid, HOD of Microbiology, and by Dr. Ravishankar, Professor, Department of General Medicine. The HODs and faculties of various departments, Post Graduate students, Under Graduate students and interns also joined the programme.

The following activities were conducted:

Activity 1: Poster presentation competition to create awareness on AMR

Poster presentation competition was organized for interns, followed by Prize distribution for the winners. The judges for the poster presentation were:

2.Dr. Ragini Ananth Kashid, HOD of Clinical Microbiology,

 The winners of the Poster presentation competition are as follows:

1 st Prize – Dr Srushti, Dr Maheshwari, Dr Harshitha

2 nd Prize – Dr Sai Ankitha, Dr R. Nishchith and Dr Hitesh BK

3 rd Prize – Dr Malavika, Dr Kiruthiga, Dr Yashodha

Activity 2: Presentation of Hospital antibiogram

On 19-11-2025, the hospital antibiogram was presented in the presence of Dr.M.E.Mohan, Dean cum Principal, Dr. Srikanth Kulkarni, Medical Superintendent, Dr. Mithun Somaiah, HOD of General Medicine, Dr. Ragini Ananth Kashid, HOD of Microbiology, HODs and faculties of various departments.

The trends in our hospital, with regards to the rise in antimicrobial resistance to various groups of antibiotics was discussed. The work of the HICC team was appreciated by the stakeholders. The plan to strengthen awareness activities and antimicrobial stewardship programme for 2026 -2027 was discussed.
